In our recent work with manufacturers throughout the state, BT Squared has discovered that many are unaware of a lucrative manufacturing energy tax exemption. Since January 2006, Wisconsin industries have been eligible for a tax exemption worth as much as 5% on energy used in their manufacturing processes. In addition to future savings, the program also allows for refunds on past taxes paid.
Companies often take only a cursory look at their utility bills, when electricity, natural gas, and propane can account for 2% or more of annual sales. Most manufacturers compare utility costs to their annual overhead budget amount, but many don’t track energy consumption adjusted to production.
