Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc.

Ocean Spray Cranberries and Veolia Cranberry Creek Landfill entered into a partnership to use methane gas from the landfill as an energy source for the cranberry processing plant as a replacement for natural gas boiler fuel. The methane gas is delivered from the landfill to the plant via a one-mile-long pipeline, where it fuels steam boilers used for cranberry processing at the plant. BT Squared met an aggressive project schedule that enabled the system to be used for processing within nine months of initial negotiations. It is expected that the landfill will be a steady source of energy for at least 20 to 30 years, and Ocean Spray will cut its annual fuel costs by 25%.

Landfill Permitting and Design

BT Squared was retained to perform the permitting of three expansion projects for a landfill in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. We created an innovative design that maximizes airspace while also addressing groundwater uplift limitations and avoiding sand seams. Our team developed alternate geotechnical programs that lowered drilling costs while still defining the complex hydrogeologic environment. We provided the Initial Site Report (ISR), Feasibility Report, Plan of Operation, valuation of initial site inspection requests of hydrogeologic conditions, design, and comprehensive project management.

City of Appleton, Wisconsin

We have worked with the City of Appleton to monitor and maintain a 54-acre solid waste landfill. The site was active from 1954 to 1974 and was closed in 1976. Our staff performs operation, maintenance, and monitoring services including cover inspection, groundwater monitoring, landfill gas monitoring, cap and gas collection system, repair and replacement of damaged monitoring wells and leachate headwells, and detailed reporting to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR). We have also assisted the city with permitting for reuse of the landfill by a local model airplane club. Our work has reduced the City of Appleton workload and costs associated with the long-term care of the facility.

Alliant Energy's Columbia Energy Center

Alliant Energy’s Columbia Energy Center recently completed the first phase of final cover construction at its dry ash disposal facility. BT Squared was responsible for completing the surveys documenting the site, final design, and construction planning, as well as specifications, construction oversight, and documentation reporting. We worked closely with Alliant and the contractor to ensure the project was completed during October and November before Mother Nature ended the construction season.

Veolia ES Cranberry Creek Landfill Compost

As Veolia ES Cranberry Creek Landfill (VCCL) prepares for a variety of organic waste diversion and beneficial reuse projects, BT Squared is assisting them with the design and implementation of a food and yard waste composting facility. We are working with VCCL to select a location for the compost facility and to obtain a license from the WDNR. In addition, we are providing solid waste and air regulation compliance for other construction and demolition debris and glass recycling projects currently in development.

Air / Gas Monitoring

Our experienced solid waste management staff provide the full spectrum of landfill air, gas, and groundwater monitoring, as well as reporting services. We maintain a high level of quality control throughout the entire process of data collection, database management, and reporting. Our monitoring services include air, gas and groundwater sample collection, including NSPS monitoring, greenhouse gas monitoring, fugitive emissions testing; and groundwater, surface water, and leachate sampling. We provide a full range of reporting including annual air emissions reports, annual CAAPP Title V compliance certifications, semiannual SSM reports, semiannual NSPS or EG reports, and monitoring reports for groundwater, surface water, sediment, and leachate.
